Description	Sketchbook with leather cover having belonged to Alfred R. Waud. Inside cover is inscribed "Alfred R. Waud / London 1847." This sketch book may date from Waud's time as a student at the Government School of Design at Somerset House, London. Contains sketches of people, boats, flags, trees, and landscapes. The series of flag sketches are painted in bright watercolors. The first page includes a recipe for invisible ink calling for diluted sulphuric acid, or lemon or onion juice, which when heated will turn brown. One page is dedicated to a transcription of four full verses of the Star Spangled Banner. One portrait is labeled "The Dean's Daughter."
