Contrary to popular opinion, leukemia is not equivalent to. an immediate death sentence, a medical educator said here Monday.
Dr. Charles A. Doan, Columbus, Ohio, dean of the college of medicine of Ohio State university, said adults, with chronic leukemia, "can live long enough to die of something else"; that there is a very effective treatment for chronic leukemia, "just as effective as insulin is for diabetes"
One of 18 medical specialists here to address the New Orleans Graduate Medical Assembly, which opened Monday at the Municipal Auditorium, Dr. Doan said even in acute leukemia, "which primarily attacks children," treatments are becoming available "which, in many patients, are extending the life expectancy."
