| Excerpted text | Five New Orleans doctors performed a heart operation on a dog Tuesday and for 27 minutes kept the dog alive with a $2 device that performed the functions of tjie dog's heart and lungs un til the pup's own organs took over again. The dog was still alive I Tuesday and there was every reason to think it would fully recover from the surgery, the doctors said. The $2 apparatus', a device con- sis ting- of little more than a plastic bag and several tubes is an artificial combined heart and lung. In a cautious and carefully worded announcement, the doc tors emphasized that their re- search with the artifical heart-lung is "in no way -complete" noting that it has not yet been used on human beings. |
