Louisiana. State university medical researchers are gathering evidence that anticoagulant drugs may forestall disabling strokes in selected patients who have had warning symptoms or attacks.
Their research is being paralleled in medical centers across the country as efforts are pressed to reduce the 200,000 annual United States death toll from strokes.
Hemorrhage accounts for some 50 per .cent of deaths from strokes. The remainder are chiefly due to brain clots and thrombosis, a clogging of brain vessels associated generally with hardening of the alteries.
Dr. Richard Paddison, neurologist in charge of the LSU studies, says about 70 per cent of 180. closely-analyzed cases of stroke-producing brain vessed disease at Charity hospital were victims of cerebral thrombosis.

AND, HE ADDS, "The significant thing is that 41 per cent of these people had warning phenomena. They had transitory symptoms, days, months or years prior to the development of a frank (outright) stroke."
It is among patients who've exhibited warning symptoms, and whose physical condition permits the use of anticoagulant drugs, that the LSU research team has concentrated its study,
. These drugs, which interfere with the clotting mechanism of the blood, appear to reduce its vicosity or stickiness sufficiently to permit a freer flow of blood through partly-clogged vessels. • • •
"THE BASIC PROCESS in this clogging," said Dr. Paddison, "is an abnormal accumulation of lipid material—fat—in the vessel wall.
"It is no different from the material occurring in the aorta (the arterial trunk leading from the heart) or vessels of the heart itself, but it appears somewhat later in vessels of the brain.'*
Heparin, one of the drugs the LSU team is using, appears to have a double-barreled action in affecting both the clotting time of the blood and helping clear the blood stream of fat already deposited,
Heparin is a substance naturally occurring in the body, and is obtained for medicad use at present from animal lungs.
