Screen can look to Jurgensen, Krajewski

              In the darkest hour of his football career, Pat Screen can look to Philadelphia Eagle quarterback Sonny Jurgen­sen and Tulane end Ron Krajewski . . . and possibly find a silver lining.
Both Jurgensen and Krajewski have bounced back from a shoulder separation, a relatively common football injury which Friday night put LSU's sophomore ace out of com­mission for the rest of 1963.            ,   , .
Jurgensen, who yesterday fired four touchdown passes in leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a 37-24 victory over Washington, suffered a shoulder separation and broken col­larbone in the NFL runnerup bowl in 1961.
Krajewski, a shoulder separation victim in the 1962 against Alabama, has held up well against the first four Greenie opponents . . .and they were anything but cream puffs.

DR. PAUL TRICKETT, Tulane team physician, recalled yesterday that Jurgensen did his first postoperative foot­ball work on the' Tulane practice field.
"Tommy O'Boyle brought Sonny over in the spring of 1962 to help with the quarterbacks," said Dr. Triekett. "Sonny told me at the time he had no ill effects and there was no restriction in his right shoulder.
"He talked a lot about how much isometric contractions helped him once he got his arm out of the sling," 
Krajewski sailed through spring practice with no trou­ble and has played well this fall.
"Ron wears a thicker pad on the shoulder he in­jured," said Wave trainer Bubba Porche. "It's more like the old type pad and it gives him better protection. . . ."

YESTERDAY AT Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge, Screen spent approximately an hour and a half on the operating table as LSU bone specialist,JDr^jU. Stander, repaired the torn ligaments,
"Pat came out of it real well," said Dr. Stander. "He had a complete separation but I feel confident he will be in good shape, after everything, heals."
Dr. Stander made a curved incision of about six inches near Pat's right shoulder and sutured all of the torn ligaments. Two threaded wires were then inserted across what doctors call the "acromioclavieular joint" for fixation.        
"This simply is to keep the bones in place while the ligaments heal," explained Dr. Stander. "In about seven or eight weeks, the wires (which are about five inches long) wil be removed under a mild anesthetic."

A SLING WILL keep Screen's right arm relatively im­mobile during the period of recovery.
J3r._Abe Mickal, tSU football star of the 1930s, called Pat's injury a "freak."
"We had lots of shoulder injuries when I played at LSU but the equipment then was not near what it is today," said Dr. Mickal. "Today's plastic shoulder pads have cut down shoulder injuries to a minimum.
"The thing is you can't cut them out'completely ... in Screen's case, it was an unfortunate incident ... some­times, no matter how great the protective equipment, you can injure yourself simply by hitting yourself on a joint. .. ."
According to LSU trainer Marty Broussard, Screen's in­jury was the first of its type sustained by a Tiger ath­lete since a lineman, by the name of John Scotto, a var­sity team member in the mid-1950s. Scotto dropped out of school after the operation.
LSU quarterbacks wear smaller pads than other play­ers in order to get more freedom of motion but the should­ers still are well protected.
