A New York City surgeon charged here Sunday that emergency treatment is "the weakest link in today's care of the injured/' Dr. Robert H. Kennedy charged further that most ambulance attendants are not sufficiently trained to administer on-the-spot emergency treatment. "There's no use running an emergency room if you're running it for dead people," added the surgeon, who is field director of a nationwide trauma program being administered by the American College of Surgeons. SURGEON'S MEETING Dr. Kennedy was among early arrivals for the sectional meeting of the College, which opens in New Orleans Monday. More than 3,500 surgeons and nurses are scheduled to attend the four-day sessions to be held at various hotels and medical schools, with headquarters at the Roosevelt Hotel. The visiting surgeon said there's practically not a hospital left in the country today which, sends an intern on emergency calls. "And did you know that only 22 per cent of the nation's general hospitals have interns or residents?" inquired the genial surgeon. "And I'm not talking about small hospitals either. Most of these hospitals have at least 500 beds. Yet of the 3,300 general hospitals in the United States today, only 726 have anyone on hand for emergency cases. The rest have to depend on calling in a private physician. "Naturally a private physician isn't just sitting around waiting for an emergency call. Sometimes it takes quite a while to track him down and get him to the emergency room." Kennedy, New York City surgeon. He is also field director of a nationwide trauma program sponsored by group.
