Havana, 30th Jany [January] 1808
Dear Carrol
As I think it very probably that all my
letter written you since our arrival will miscarry I have
now to repeat the story via Charleston. We left the Balize
on Friday the 22nd and arrived safe in port in 69 hours on the
next Monday. The Pilot boat Ranger, the Express the Rachel
and Schooner Jane all left the same time, the Ranger & Jilt got
in at same time, the Rachel & Jane were 6 days, the Express
is not yet arrived probably gone to windward, tho [sic.] the Ranger
is still here. Since the news of the Embargo a much greater
number of vessels with flour dropped in (than is generally the last(?)
most of them were cleared for New Orleans, most of them
under the Bonds of the 1st Act- & some under the penalties of the
supplementary. So many arrivals almost convinced the lPani
under(?) that the Embargo was a hurn in consequence flour
fell to $15 @ 17 no buyers. However since the supplement
has arrived the Govr. [Governor] has ordered that no vessel with Provisions
shall go taken upon any pretense and within a few days, no
flour has come in which has given a little motion to the
market and we expect in a few days a rise to 20 @ 25 Drs.
altho [sic] there is flour enough here for City Consumption for
four or five months say 26000 @ 28000 barrels. I shall take
the first decent offer altho [sic] I have determined to hold on
a few days until I do something with your copper which
I will not leave here. It is as yet all on hand & I think
it impossible to sell it at any price cash. I wish Felise
had sold it some time ago for Sugars, he could have
had a dollar for it & Sugars low. The Govt. [Government] will not
