Med School
Gets Special
Project Grant
The special projects division
of the U.S. Department of
Health, Education and Welfare
has recently given Louisiana
State U n i v e r s i t y Medical
School at Shreveport a $100,282,
threeyear federal grant.
The funds include $38,79fi for
this year, $38,622 for next year
and $22,864 for the third year.
The latter two grants will
drpend on availability of funds,
said Dr. Marion Hargrove,
head of the school's depart-ment
of medicine.
Dr. Hargrove said because
the federal government is
interested in increasing the
number of doctors to improve
health care, the special pro-jects
grant was set up.
In the pilot project the
medical school will work with
LSU at Shreveport in coming
up with a six or seven-year
program. The first step will be
to hire a man at the full
professorship level to work one
studying the most feasible
method of working out such a
curriculum. The next two
years will be spent in imple-menting
the plan.
Dr. Hargrove said that al-though
details have not been
worked out, the first partici-pants
will probably be hand-picked
"outstanding and prom-ising
high school seniors who
are interested in medicine."
The students for the prograrr
will get tentative, provisional
admission to medical schoo
until they meet regular en
trance requirements.
Dr. Edgar Hull, dean nf the
school, is program director.
