$150,000 Deficit Seen
At Confederate Hospital
By Margaret Martin
Times Medical Writer
Confederate Memorial Medical
Center is expected to end the
fiscal year with a deficit of
$150,000, about $100,000 less than
originally anticipated, accordng
to Robert Hall, assistant admin-istrator.
Hall said both medicare and
medicaid had increased pay-ents
over projected figures.
"If collections improve, he
said, "we will be down more, but
still short."
He said the Pines Sanitarium
and the Confederate Nursing
School budgets will have a total!
surplus of about $50,000, "but
this money can't be transferred
to the hospital budget. Each
budget stands on its own."
The Legislative Budget Com-mittee
has recommended a total
expenditure budget of $9.4 mil-lion
for the hospital for next
year. Hall reported.
The board confirmed the ap-pointment
of Dr. Thomas A.
Grant, radiologist, on a halftime
basis at the institution for a
salary of $10,500, effective Satur-day.
The board also voted to put the
Pathology Department under
contractual agreement with
Louisiana State University Medi-j
cal School at Shrevcport, "in
principle only," according to Dr.
Edgar Hull, dean of the school.
Dr. Hull and Dr. Edgar!
Galloway, director of the hospi-tal,
emphasized that no member
of I he department will be under
LSU at this time and Dr. W. R.
Mathews remains as head of the
department.
"Everything must go through
Dr. Mathews," said Dr. Gallo-way.
Dr. Charles Black, head of the
committee for The Pines, report-ed
that in March there were 118
outpatients; 54 patients admit-ed;
54 average patient load; 19
admited; 17 discharged, and 1
deserted, and in April, there will
be 111 outpatients* 56 average
patient load; 17 admitted; 10
discharged and one died.
