LSU Med School officials say
radiology flap being resolved
Although members of the staff of
the department of radiology of LSU
Medical Center in Shreveport have
reportedly threatened to resign un-less
their department head is re-placed,
the medical school adminis-tration
says the problem is being
resolved.
"We are trying to resolve the, situ-ation.
It is a very tough situation,
very complex," Mac Griffith, public
information director, said Friday.
There have been no resignations in
the department, according to Grif-fith.
An ad hoc committee met in Sep-tember,
he said, to study the prob-lem.
Dr. Justin Wolfson, head of radio-logy,
said he has plenty of opinions
on the situation, but declined to com-ment
as a matter of ethics.
Statements issued by the local
school and by the chancellor of the
entire LSU Medical School system
each addressed the problem as an
internal matter.
"This is an internal administrative
matter germane solely to the LSU
School of Medicine in Shreveport,
which is now in the process of being
resolved. Therefore to comment at
this time, I feel, would be inap-propriate,"
Chancellor Allen Cop-ping
said.
The statement issued by the local
medical school said, " Any such
situations involving departmental
administration are considered to be
matters of an internal academic na-ture
and any comments substantiat-ing
or rebutting them would be inap-propriate."
Local state legislators have re-ported
that they met shortly before
the legislative session to discuss pos-sible
problems at the medical school.
Rep. Walter Bigby said the meet-ing
combined legislators and a group
of doctors and professors of the
school. The doctors discussed their
complaints during the meeting, he
said, and the legislators requested
that Gov. Edwin Edwards check into
the situation to prevent damage to
the medical school.
Sen. Virginia Shehee said that she
felt the problem was one of internal
operations that the administration of
the school was capable of handling,
saying that the situation basically
involved disgruntled faculty mem-bers.
Dr. Abraham Nicholson, who
serves as a consultant to the depart-ment
in his job as clinical professor,
said he was aware of problems in the
department.
He said he did feel that there were
equipment and staffing problems
and that the conflict was definitely
[hurting the department.
