COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS
presented yesterday by the Community
Council went to Mrs. William Murphy,
representing the Shreveport Junior
League, and Al Mazur (second from
right), chief probation- officer for the
Caddo Parish Juvenile Court. Looking

Probation Officer, League
Receive Community Award
Al Mazur. administrative and
chief probation officer for the
Caddo Parish Juvenile Court,
was presented the Community
Council's Community Service
awards at its annual luncheon
yesterday.
The Shreveport Junior League
was also honored for its 36 years
of service to the community. A
plaque was presented to the
Junior League's president, Mrs.
William Murphy.
The Rev. Dan F. Goodwin,
pastor of the Broadmoor Pres-byterian
Church, was elected
president of the Council for the
coming year.
Keynote speaker, J. B. Keith,
assistant regional representative
of (he Vocational Rehabilitation
Service in Dallas, Tex., ad-dressed
the more than 200 people
who attended.
He pointed out the need of the
local community assuming major
responsibility for the training
I and employment of the handi-capped.
He said that there are
now many services available and
he hopes to see new ones
developed in the Greater Shreve-port
Area which will help the
handicapped to gain necessary
training so that they can obtain
good jobs.
Other new officers elected
were Dr. E. E. Allen, first vice
president, Judge Gorman E.
Taylor, second vice president,;
Mrs. Whitfield Jack, secretary
and Mrs. Irma Green Jackson,
treasurer.
J. New Board members will be
Dr. Patti Van Hook. Thomas C.
'Archie, Roy Beard, Myron Dorf-man,.
(he Rev. David George,
Miss Dorothv Risinger, Dr. N. L.
Lacy, Rabbi David Lefkowitz,
Jerry LeVan, Dr. Lee Morgan
and Mrs. Virginia Shehee.
Mazur, : long active in the
community, was recognized for
his outstanding work with chil-dren
and youth. He is chairman
of the Advisory Council of the
Youth Opportunity Center, past
chairman of the Red Shield Boys
Club ,he lped organize the Junior
Rifle Club and was one of the
principal organizers of the Amer-ican
Legion Baseball Program.
He has been active in many
drives including the Centenary
College Greater - Teacher Pro-gram,
United Fund and Goodwill
Industries. He served as a
member on the Board of Direc-tors
of the Community Council.
Salvation Army, Volunteers of
America and many other organi-zations".
Mazur is also widely known for
his participation in sports and
was a professional ball player
for the Boston Red Sox. When in
1946 he moved to Shreveport, he
became a member of the Shreve-port
Sports. Since that time, he
has been active in many athletic
programs and has been instru-mental
in establishing the Cham-ber
of Commerce's Athletic
Affairs Committee which recog-nizes
and honors outstanding
athletes in the Ark-La-Tex area
each year.
The Shreveport Junior League
was recognized by the Council as
havina a major role in the
establishment of almost every
agency in the community.
Edwin C. Harbuck. current
president of the Community
Council, presenting the plaque
stated. "The Junior League has
spent 36 years in the community
providing services for people in
Shreveport and Bossier City.
Many agencies owe its beginning
to the League and these agencies
include the Community Council,
the United Fund, Family &
Children Services. Child Guid-ance
Center, Genevieve Day
Care Center .Speech Correction
Center and many other groups.
