400 Horses to Compete in Charity Contests Here

Out-of-state exhibitors from
Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida,
Oklahoma and Texas arrived
Monday to begin final prepara-tions
for the 5th annual Shreve-port
Charity Horse Show, to be.
held Wednesday through Satur-day
at the Hirsch Memorial
Coliseum, State Fair Grounds.
More than 400 horses are
entered in the 72 classes to be
shown during the four-day event.
All proceeds from the show
this year will go to the Birth
Defect Center at the Louisiana
State University Medical School
here. Co-sponsors for tfie equine
competition are the Shreveport
Charity Horse Show Association,
the March of Dimes and the
Shreveport Junior Chamber of
Commerce.
Classes will show nightly be-ginning
at 7 p.m. Wednesday
through S a t u r d a y . Additional
showings are scheduled for 1
p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. and 1
p.m. Saturday.
Mrs. W. L. Hutson will serve
as show manager this year
Chairmen for the show will be
Ed Hullett. representing the
Shrev&port Horse Show Associa-tion;
Michael Mangham, Shreve-port
Jaycees; and Dr. Peyton
Kelley, March of Dimes.
Judges Announced
Max Parkinson of Champaign,
111., will judge saddle horses, fine
harness, roadster, saddle seat
equitation and saddlebred pleas-ure
classes. Dude Crowder of
Creedmoor, N.C., will be the:
[judge for walking horses and
walking seat equitation. Hunters
and jumpers and hunt seat
equitation will be judged by Earl
Frazier of Marietta, Ga. Judging
western pleasure competition
will be Gerald Files of Mans-field.
The Shreveport show is sanc-
[ tioned by the American Horse
Shows Association, Inc.
Classes to be shown Wednes-day
night are: Open jumper;
open roadster to bike: walking
stallion; five-gaited stallions and
gelding; five-gaited mares; walk-ing
mares; three-gaited, 15.2
hands and over; walking geld-ings;
fine harness open; and
open jumper, six bar.
On tap for Thursday night will
be classes for open jumper,
knockdown and out; fine harness
amateur stake; walking horse,
three-year-old; roadster ama-teur;
ladies amateur walking
horse: ladies three-gaited; ladies
five-gaited; men's amateur walk-ing
horse: fine harness junior;
and working hunters open.
Slated to compete Friday after-noon
will be junior jumpers
open: five-gaited, three-year-old;
walking horse, 15.2 and under:
three-gaited, 15.2 and under;
working hunters under saddle:
walking horse, two-year-old; sad-dlebred
pleasure, 18 years and
older: three-gaited junior; junior
working hunter; and working
hunter open.
Classes scheduled for Friday
night include the working hunt-ers
stake; five-gaited junior;
alking horse juvenile, 13 to 17
years of age; ladies fine har-ness;
walking horse juvenile, 12
years and under: three-gaited
juvenile, 12 years and under;
three-gaited juvenile, 13 to 17
years of age; walking horse,
four-year-old; roadster, speed
on,y; and gamblers' choice.
Saturday Events Told
Classes will be shown simulta-nously
at 9 a.m. Saturday in the
main arena and in the adjacent
barn. Events slated for the main
arena are novice horsemanship
over fences: novice hunters;
hunter model open; and hunt
seat equitation, 17 years and
under. Judging in the adjacent
barn will be in academy equita-tion,
12 years and under; west-ern
pleasure, 18 years and older;
academy equitation, 13 to 17
years of age; western pleasure,
17 years and under: academy
equitation championship; saddle-bred
weanlings; walking wean-lings:
saddlebred yearlings; and
walking yearlings.
Stake competition will be con-ducted
beginning at 1 p.m.
Saturday. Afternoon events in-clude
junior hunter stake: saddle
seat equitation, 10 years and
under; saddlebred pleasure, 17
years and under; saddle seat
equitation, 11 to 13 years of age:
five-gaited juvenile; saddle seat
equitation, 14 to 17 years;
saddlebred pleasure stake; walk-ing
equitation, 17 years and
under; and western pleasure
stake.
Showing Saturday night will be
the jumper stake: saddle seat
equitation championship; three-gaited
amateur stake; fine har-ness
stake: walking amateur
stake: f i v e - g a i t e d amateur
stake; three-gaited a m a t e u r
stake; roadster stake; walking
stake; and five-gaited stake. The
hunter-jumper award will also be
presented that night.
Getting In Shape for tomorrow's first round of
competition in the 5th annual Shreveport Charity

rse from the Don Harris Stables in Owensboro, Ky.
show begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Hirsch
Memorial Coliseum at the State Fair Grounds and
runs through Saturday night. More than 400 horses
have been entered in 72 classes. Proceeds will go to
the establishment of a Birth Defects Center at the
Louisiana State University Medical School here.
