LSUMC schedules second medical seminar on aging
By SALLY REESE
Times Medical Writer
LSU Medical Center in Shreveport
has scheduled a second seminar on
aging in preparation for the White
House Conference of Aging to be held
in Washington, DC, late next year.
Like the first, the seminar, to be
held Jan. 21 in the auditorium at the
School of Medicine, will address
medical aspects of aging. It is free to
practicing physicians, residents and
interns, and to students of medicine,
nursing and allied health pro-fessions.
Dean Ike Muslow will open the
seminar at 9 a.m. On the agenda are
medical
beat
the following, in order of ap-pearance:
"The Skin: Wrinkles, Blotches and All
That," Dr. Paul R. Winder, chief of the
dermatology section; "The Aged
Urogenital System," Dr. A. Colin
Markiand, head of the urology depart-ment;
"Neurologic Disorders of Aging,"
Dr. Larry J. Embree, head of the depart-ment
of neurology;
"Changes in Body Composition With
Age," Dr. George R. Meneely, professor
of medicine, physiology and biophysics;
"The Heart, an Offbeat View," Dr. Hen-ry
G. Hanley, chief of the cardiology
section; "The Heart, inside and Out,"
Dr. William Y. Tucker, chief of
cardiothoracic surgery.
"Arteries and Veins, a Medical Ap-proach,"
Dr. William J. Bugni, assistant
professor of medicine; and "Arteries
and Veins, a Surgical Approach," Dr.
John C. McDonald, head of the depart-ment
of surgery.
New vaccine his goal
A researcher at LSU Medical Cen-ter
hopes to develop a more effective
vaccine against a common organism
that can produce severe complica-tions
in cystic fibrosis, severe burns
and cancer.
Dr. Harry Gilleland has begun a
study under a two-year grant of
$91,575 from the American Cancer
Society. Title of the project is "De-velopment
of an Outer Membrane
Protein Vaccine for Pseudomonas
aeruginosa."
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is pres-ent
in the gastrointestinal tract of
about 20 percent of healthy persons,
but rarely threatens them. Only
when their resistance to infection is
compromised can the organism pro-duce
severe and often life-threaten-ing
complications.
Gilleland, a professor of micro-biology
and immunology, said it is a
significant cause of nosocomial in-fection,
an infection a person ac-quires
while hospitalized.
Gilleland said bacterial infection is
a major cause of death in cancer
cases, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa
is one of the three most common
bacteria causing infection. Man-agement
of infection has become a
crucial component of cancer care, he
said.
Existing vaccines are not always
effective against the Organism, and
also may cause toxicity, it was re-ported.
Gilleland is investigating use of a
protein in the outer membrane of the
organism as a vaccine.
M.D. to advise FDA
Dr. Joseph E. Loewenstein, chief
of the endocrinology section at LSU
Medical Center in Shreveport, has
been appointed to the endocrinologic
and metabolic drugs advisory com-mittee
of the Food and Drug Admin-istration.
Loewenstein, a professor of medi-cine,
has been on the LSU School of
Medicine faculty here since 1970.
