Doctors to be honored March 30
Shreveport Medical Society Auxiliary
members have set in motion their plans for
Doctor's Day held annually on March 30. Mrs.
Floyd Peninger is chairman of this year's
observance; Mrs. W. H. Carroll and Mrs. John
Greer are her co-chairmen.
Dr. David Swearingen Sr., who is celebrat-ing
50 years in the profession, will be honored
at all ceremonies held in conjunction with
Doctor's Day. On March)

Night dinner and cocktail
party honoring their hus-bands,
Dr. James
Bergeron, president of the
Shreveport Medical Soci-ety,
will present Dr.
Swearingen with a pro-clamation
from Gov.
David Treen. Swearingen
As a memorial to all physicians, both living
and deceased, a magnolia tree, donated by
Clyde Gorum, will be planted at the Barnwell
Garden and Art Center on March 30. Taking
part in the tree-planting will be Mayor Bill
Hanna, Dr. Bergeron, Mrs. Peninger, Mrs.
James Cotter, Mrs. Charles Stamper and Mrs.
W. Juan Watkins, president of the Shreveport
Medical Society Auxiliary.
Traditionally, all hospitals honor their staff
physicians with red carnations, coffees and
luncheons during the last week of March.
Willis-Knighton Medical Center will hold its
annual breakfast on March 26, while the
others will celebrate March 30. Doctors' Hos-pital
will serve coffee and doughnut holes
along with the carnations; Schumpert Medical
Center will have a continental breakfast;
Highland will honor its doctors at a luncheon;
and P&S will have a gourmet luncheon using
favorite recipes of the hospital staff. LSU
Hospital, Brentwood and the VA Medical
Center also are making plans to honor their
staff doctors on March 30. Auxiliary members
serving as chairmen of these events are Mrs.
John Leopard, Willis-Knighton; Mrs. Durell
Hiller Jr., Doctors'; Mrs. Willis Coylar, High-land;
Mrs. Clint Jones, LSU; Mrs. Peninger,
P&S; Mrs. Simeon Wall, Schumpert; Mrs.
James Cotter, VA; and Mrs. Edward
Leatherman, Brentwood.
In addition to the special honoree, all physi-cians
who received their license to practice 40
or more years ago are being honored during
March. They include Dr. Charles Anderson,
Dr. Nathan Bender, Dr. Charles Black Sr., Dr.
C. E. Boyd, Dr. Louis Breffeilh, Dr. Wallace
Brown, Dr. Frank Bryant, Dr. Jack Carlisle,
Dr. Wynton Carroll, Dr. Albert Clark, Dr. John
Cobb, Dr. Howard Cohenour, Dr. Penn Crain
Jr., Dr. John Crenshaw, Dr. Richard D. Crow,

On March 30, these doctors will receive,
along with their red carnations, handwritten
notes prepared by the Doctor's Day commit-tee
to acknowledge this milestone in their
careers.
Mrs. Charles Stamper, chairman of memo-rials,
will deliver sympathy notes to the wives
of deceased doctors on this special occasion.
Other members of Mrs. Peninger's commit-tee
are Mrs. John Chidlow, Mrs. John Henry,
Mrs. Keith Mason Jr., Mrs. J. C. Jones and
Mrs. Felix Prakasamm.
