LSU Hospital to reopen
some beds closed in '82
LSU Hospital will soon be able to
reopen some of its beds closed in
1982, according to Dr. Allen A. Cop-ping,
the Chancellor of LSU Medical
Center.
Copping announced Friday that
Gov. Dave Treen has exempted the
hospital from a state hiring freeze
imposed March 25.
"Gov. Treen's exception from the
hiring freeze will allow us to begin
filling vacant positions immediately
so that we have sufficient em-ployees
to reopen a portion of the
hospital beds closed in 1982. This
will include psychiatric beds,
neonatal intensive care beds and one
nursing unit consisting of 26 beds,
Copping said.
Last year the hospital's bed ca-pacity
dropped from 507 to 369 be-cause
of budget reductions, reno-vations
and a shortage of nurses.
"I think the exception granted by
Gov. Treen to allow us to reopen a
portion of the previously closed beds
is timely and important to meet
critical patient care needs in the
LSU hospital," Copping said.
