News From L S. U. School of Medicine
The first professorship to honor a distinguished faculty member of Louisiana
State University Medical Center has been created by the LSU Board of Supervisors.
The professorship honors Dr. Edgar Hull, a charter member of the 37-year old
LSU medical faculty, and dean of the new LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport,
now under development.
Dr. Hull joined the University medical faculty in 1931 as an instructor in the
Department of Medicine of the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, the
original unit of the LSU Medical Center.
Prior to assuming the deanship of the LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport,
Dr. Hull served as professor and head of the department of Medicine and as associate
dean of the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans.
The Board's action created the "Edgar Hull Alumni Professorship in Medicine"
at the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, said Dr. William W. Frye, chancellor
of the LSU Medical Center.
"The professorship will be supported in part by annual proceeds of the LSU
Medical Challenge Fund, a voluntary program of financial support of the LSU School
of Medicine in New Orleans by its more than 3,000 physician graduates throughout
the world," said Dr. Frye.
The Fund was begun in 1966, and a portion of its proceeds will be dedicated
each year to support the professorship.
A faculty search committee of the School of Medicine in New Orleans is
presently seeking a physician to fill the position of professor and head of the De-partment
of Medicine, formerly held by Dr. Hull. The person named by the LSU
Board of Supervisors to fill this position will become the first "Edgar Hull Alumni
Professor of Medicine", Dr. Frye continued.
Dr. John C. Finerty, dean of the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans,
termed the professorship of great benefit to the University in meeting its responsi-bilities
to the people of Louisiana in the field of medical education.
"It honors Dr. Hull, who is held in the highest esteem, personally and pro-fessionally,
by the physicians of Louisiana, having taught each of the 3,019 medical
doctors who have earned the LSU doctor of medicine degree. The professorship was
made possible by the generous support of the LSU alumni physicians who have
chosen to honor and support their medical alma mater through the LSU Medical
Challenge Fund. Having this professorship will greatly enhance our ability to attract
the best available physician to fill the vital position as head of our Department of
Medicine," Dr. Finerty concluded.
