Dr. Robert T. Lafargue Dr. J. Stanford Shelby
2 Shreveport Physicians
Win Professional Honor
Two local physicians have
been elected Fellows in the
American College of Cardiolo-gy-
Dr. J. Stanford Shelby and
Dr, Robert Lafargue were ac-cepted
into the organization at
its recent meeting in Washing-ton,
D.C.
A "fellow" designation in the
college, according to college
officials, is a recognition by
"their colleagues as knowledge-a
b 1 e, experienced clinicians
who have channelled medical or
surgical interest in diagnosing
and treating cardiovascular dis-ease."
Among requirements for a
Fellow is certification by a
primary specialty board or
evidence of ability to take
examinations held by the board.
Shelby is a native of Ringgold
and was educated at Louisiana
Tech, Louisiana State Universi-ty
and the LSU School of
Medicine. He interned at Chari-ty
Hospital of New Orleans, and
took residencies in general
surgery and thoracic surgery at
Charity, and received fellow-ships
in cardiovascular surgery
from .the Department of Sur-gery,
Baylor University College
of Medicine, where he studied
under Dr. Michael DeBakey
and Dr. Denton Cooley.
He served as chief of cardio-vascular
surgery at Confederate
Memorial Medical Center from
1966-1968, and is now assistant
professor of surgery at the LSU
School of Medicine here. He is a
Diplomate of the American
Board of Surgery and the Board
of Thoracic Surgery.
A native of Shreveport, La-fargue
was educated at Loyola
University of the South and the
LSU School of Medicine. He
interned at CMMC and took
residency in internal medicine
at the University of Mississippi
M e d i c a l Center, and was
awarded a fellowship in cardiol-ogy
from the University of
Colorado Medical Center.
He is clinical instructor in
cardiology at the LSU School of
Medicine here.
