Almost all lots bought for Med Center
There's one single holdout in state
plans to purchase property along
Woodrow Street for LSU Medical
Center expansion, but the state is not
concerned.
Ben Meyer, head of the state's
Facilities Planning division, said
Thursday that the state will go ahead
with plans to convert the lots to
parking areas and an entrance drive,
leaving the house sitting in the midst
of it an.
He said the state will not try to
expropriate the last of the 24 lots,
which is located in the middle of the
row of houses.
"Frankly, it's not too useful for the
people that have it with the hospital
around it," Meyer said.
"Some people could say it's very
serious. You should have the whole
block," he said. "Eventually we will
get it, but it is not that important
now."
The Caddo-Bossier legislative del-egation
at first recommended
purchase of the Woodrow Street
property, which backs up to the
medical center complex, as an alter-native
to purchasing the 10-acre
Spartan-Atlantic lot at Kings High-way
and Linwood.
But Gov. Edwin Edwards said he
would not set about ousting people
from their homes so the medical
center could get the land.
Soon afterwards, steps to purchase
both the Spartan-Atlantic land and
the Woodrow Street property were
unveiled.
Money used for the property
purchase is part of some $3.3 million
in bond monies earmarked for park-ing
and other related medical center
projects. Earlier state officials said
the property was being purchased
for an average of $3 a square foot.
A drainage ditch flows behind the
lots, separating them from the med
center. Plans call for the ditch to be
covered and a boulevard-type drive-way
to be constructed leading into
the medical center complex.
