Confederate Faces Shortage
Of Internes in Coming Year
By Margaret Martin
Of The Times Staff
Dr. Edgar Galloway, director
of Confederate Memorial Medi-cal
Center, predicted last night
that if more internship applica-tions
are not forthcoming, "we
are going to come up pretty
short."
Galloway told the Confederate
Board of D i r e c t o r s that 14
medical students have applied
for the rotating internships;
three for straight medicine
internships and two for straight
pediatric internships.
The board at its last meeting
voted funds for intensive re-cruiting
of interns, but Galloway
told the board last night that the
house staff felt the delayed
action was too late.
. they felt it should have
been done earlier. Some places
send students out to recruit in
early September," he said.
Free Meals for Some
In other action last night the
board voted to reinstate free
meals for those visiting staff
members who volunteer their
time to the hospital, and who
are working there at meal
times.
Not included in the free-meal
category are physicians paid by
either Confederate or Louisiana
State University Medical School
at Shreveport. The move res-cinds
action of over a year ago
which eliminated free meals for
anyone.
There are 280 members of the
visiting staff, but this total also
i n c l u d e s those employed by
either LSU or Confederate, and
Galloway's office had no break-down
of those who receive a
salary and those who are
strictly volunteer.
Neither did Galloway have an
estimate of the cost of the
meals.
"I can't give you any figure. I
don't know," he said after the
meeting.
Asst. Administrator Robert
Hall estimated that there would
not be over 10 meals a day
served free, and he said the
meals are based on an item - by
item basis and the price fluc-tuates.
He said the costs per meal
would probably not be more
than 70 cents.
The surprise motion to rein-state
the free meals was made
by Tommy Thompson of Min-den.
Both LSU Dean Dr. Edgar
Hull and Board chairman, T. B.
Lanford urged the board to
study the matter before it voted,
but did not oppose the move.
Hull pointed out that doctors
who are on the visiting staff as
volunteers and those who are
paid have the same status. And
he said he had m i s g i v i n g s
setting up two d i v i s i o n s of
visiting staff members.
And Lanford urged. "I want
you to be sure you understand
this before you vote."
Both he and Tony Pernici said
there had been some criticism
and discussion among volunteer
doctors, and Galloway com
mented, "I know there has been
a lot of resentment among those
who are made to pay."
Margie Williams, administra-tive
assistant to Galloway, told
Lanford that ''some doctors
have not been coming out here
because of it."
Calls it Principle
Lanford said, "I know and it's
not the money. It's the princi-ple."
Galloway said he had not
thought about how to handle the
matter administratively, "but I
will discuss it with the dieti-tian."
The board also approved a
recommendation of the visiting
staff t o add Dr. Glenn Gary
Brooks to the visiting staff from
the Department of Obstetrics
and Gynecology. He is employed
fulltirrie by the medical school.
Dr. Charles Black reported
that there are 74 freshmen
enrolled in the Confederate
School of Nursing. There are 13
junior students and 26 seniors.
The Pines Sanatorium had 90
outpatients; an average census
of 48; 11 admissions, and four
patients discharged in Novem-ber.
There are presently 43
patients at the facility
