BATON ROUGE (AP) -
A record $107.59 million budget
proposal—an increase of $22.1
m i l l i o n over last year—was
recommended for the Louisiana
State University system Friday.
The proposal, drafted by the
system's financial affairs office,
was approved without change
by the LSU board of supervisors
sitting as a committee of the
whole.
The board was scheduled to
meet Saturday to consider for-mal
adoption.
Chancellors from each of the
LSU campuses forecast 2,909
more students will enroll in the
system next fall. At present
there are 38,225 students at the
five c a m p u s e s and in the
medical school.
. .The committee was told 1,424
more students will enroll at
Baton Rouge, which now has
20,600 students, and another
1,200 at New Orleans, which has
14,238 students.
Another 40 students are ex-pected
to enroll in medical
school, 130 at Shreveport, 30 at
Eunice and 85 at Alexandria,
the committee was told.
Salary Increases
, In other action, the committee
recommended:
—Board approval of salary
increases at all but the Baton
Rouge campus which has been
approved for the current aca-demic
year but held up by
President Nixon's wage-price
freeze. An LSU spokesman said
increases were not applicable to
Baton Rouge b e c a u s e funds
were not available.
—A five-year capital outlay
prediction for all c a m p u s e s
totaling $207.1 million and in-cluding
a $61.46 million projec-tion
for LSU-Baton Rouge and a
$49.33 million forecast for LSU-New
Orleans. The five year
recommendation is required by
the legislature.
The projection included $1.89
million for the Alexandria cam-pus,
$2.88 million for the Eunice
campus, $6.4 million for Shreve-port,
and $85.1 million for the
LSU medical center.
The proposed budget includes
an increase of $12.4 million in
.pending for instruction, re-search
and extension, and a
$4.77 million hike in salaries.
The g r e a t e s t increase in
funds, $20.13 m i l l i o n , would
come from general state appro-priations,
if the board adopts
the budget as proposed.
The LSU system budget for
1971-72 totaled $85.5 million and
included $63 million in general
state appropiations. The 1972-73
budget, as p r o p o s e d , would
include $83.2 million in general
state appropriations.
Suggested Increases
The proposal includes a sug-gested
increase of $9.6 million to
$64.6 million in the budget for
the Baton Rouge campus and
recommends $578,860 for t h e
school of veterinary medicine,
$9,233 million for the agricultur-al
experiment station, and $9.67
million for the cooperative ex-tension
service.
For the LSU c a m p u s at
Alexandria, the financial affairs
office recommended a $1,697
million budget, a $329,054 in-crease
over the last school year,
and for LSU-New Orleans, $17.5
million, or $5.3 million over last
year.
For the University medical
center system, the p r o p o s a 1
gives $19.8 m i l l i o n , a $6.27
increase, and for the medical
and graduate schools at New
Orleans, $8.4 million, an in-crease
of $2.6 million.
The financial affairs office
recommended to the committee
a $983,891 budget for 1972-73 for
nursing, and suggested a $4.93
million for the university medi-cal
school. For the school of
m e d i c i n e in Shreveport, the
department recommended $4.75
million.
Recommended increases to-taled
$312,001 for nursing, $1.54
million for dental school, and
$1.82 million for the school of
medicine in Shreveport.
And the financial affairs de-partment
recommended a budg-et
of $992,204 for LSU at Eunice
and $1.98 m i l l i o n for LSU-Shreveport.
The increases would
total $150,526 at Eunice and
$276,347 at Shreveport.
