Professor1 Takes Issue
With Psychiatric Article
Editor, The Times:
I think it important to take issue with
a statement attributed to Dr. James G.
Ranck, a psychologist, In a feature
article on the religion page of The Times
of Sunday, Dec. 26, 1971. The article is by
Ken Briggs of Newsday and is entitled
"Psychiatrist Lists Nine Religion Danger
Signals." In the article Dr. Ranck is said
to have offered the opinion that psychia-try
generally has had a low regard for
religion, and "tends to write off all of it
as pathological."
This simply is not true. Though
psychiatrists recognize that in certain
emotional illnesses distorted religious
ideas may be p r e s e n t , they fully
appreciate the role of religion in mental
health. In fact, for many years the
Academy of Religion and Mental Health
has been in existence, its membership
consisting of clergymen of all denomina-tions,
psychiatrists, and members of
allied mental health fields. It is a large
and active organization with regional
chapters in all parts of the United States.
In Shreveport for the past two years a
Clinical Pastoral Training Program has
been given under the joint sponsorship of
the Committee of Medicine & Religion;
Shreveport Medical Society; Louisiana
State University School of Medicine,
Shreveport; Shreveport Bossier Ministe-rial
Association; Committee of Clinical
Pastoral Education, Shreveport-Bossier
and the Council on M e d i c i n e and
R e l i g i o n , Shreveport-Bossier. In this
program psychiatrists on the faculty of
the L.S.U. Medical School in Shreveport
have been very active; and the clergy-men
and psychiatrists participating have
come to have a fuller understanding of
the many ways in which their roles
complement each other.
I would deeply appreciate your having
this called to the attention of readers of
The Shreveport Times.
