Contribution Made
The Louisiana Chapter, Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation has con-tributed
$16,992 to the LSUMC
School of Medicine in Shreveport to
support the cystic fibrosis program
conducted here.
Dr. Bettina Hilman, professor of
pediatrics and chief of the
pulmonary /allergy section is
medical director of the cystic
fibrosis program. She said the
funds will be used to support the
cystic fibrosis coordinator within
the section who also performs the
technical and pulmonary function
screening for cystic fibrosis pa-tients,
and for support of the regis-tered
nurse who works with cystic
fibrosis patients.
Nursing School Events
Pauline T. Johnson, coordinator
of the department of continuing
education at Northwestern State
University College of Nursing, has
announced the school's calendar of
events for the spring semester,
1983.
On Jan. 24 and 31, 7:30-9:30 p.m.,
Diane Graham, RN, MSN, will be
the instructor for "Quality As-surance
and the Staff Nurse."
"Understanding Human Sexu-ality:
the Nurse and the Client" will
be presented by assistant
professors Jackie O'Neil, RN, MS,
and Betty Paul, RN, MA, on Feb. 6,
21 and 28 and March 7, 14 and 21,
7:30-9:30 p.m.
"Advanced Interpretation of the
12 Lead EKG" will be offered Feb.
22 and March 1,8,15 and 22, taught
by Inez M. Kernick, RN, BSN, criti-cal
care clinical instructor at
Schumpert Medical Center.
The three events listed above
will be held at the College of Nurs-ing,
1800 Warrington Place.
Florence S. Downs, associate
dean and director of graduate pro-grams,
School of Nursing, Univer-sity
of Pennsylvania, will be the
keynote speaker for a two-day pro-gram,
"Nursing Research: A Foun-dation
for Clinical Practice," to be
held at the Holidome, 1-20 and Bun-combe
Road, with Beta Chi
chapter, Sigma Theta Tau, as co-sponsor.
The second Northwestern Lou-isiana
Spring Conference for Men-tal
Health Practice will be held
April 15 at the Schumpert Medical
Center auditorium, with J. Rahn
Sherman, assistant secretary, Of-fice
of Mental Health and
Substance Abuse, Department of
Health and Human Relations, as
keynote speaker.

Elected to Fellowship
Sudha Ashol Rao, M.D., was
elected to fellowship in the Ameri-can
Academy of Pediatrics at a re-cent
meeting of the AAP executive
board. Dr. Rao is an active medical
staff member at Willis Knighton
Medical Center and a courtesy
staff member at LSU Medical
Center.
The academy is the Pan-Ameri-can
association of physicians
certified in the care of infants, chil-dren
and young adults, with 24,000
members in the United States, Can-ada
and Latin America.
To qualify, a pediatrician must
have been certified as a fully quali-fied
specialist in the field of child
health. Certification requires a
minimum of five years post-medi-cal
school experience.
Research Grant
A $45,950 research grant has
been awarded by the Louisiana
Board of Regents to fund a project
under way at LSUMC School of
Medicine in Shreveport.
Cheng Yu, Ph.D., assistant
professor, department of pedi-atrics
is principal investigator for
the project, entitled "Application
of Fragile X Chromosome and High
Resolution Human Chromosomes
Techniques to the Mentally Re-tarded
Population of North Louisi-ana.

installed as
president of the

annual meeting

month. Seborn
E. Woods, M.D.,
was chosen the 1983 president
elect, W.W. Fox, M.D., was elected
vice president and Peter B. Boggs,
M.D., was elected secretary.
