Rehabilitation Services unit opens

LSU Medical Center introduced its enlarged Re-habilitation
Services unit with a ribbon-cutting and open
house at LSU Hospital Tuesday afternoon.
The suite on the first floor of the hospital provides for
the consolidation of the medical center's physica.l, oc-cupational
and speech therapy services. On staff are
three occupational therapists, four physical therapists,
two speech pathologists, seven assistants and a
secretary, all under direction of Dr. Joe McCulloch.
McCulloch, together with Joe Miciotto, associate
hospital administrator, and Dr. Gordon Schucker,
coordinator of the School of Allied Health Professions in
Shreveport, cut the ribbon to symbolically open the
enlarged, consolidated services.
The faculty of the School of Allied Health Professions
provides the hospital-based rehabilitation services.
Schuckers noted Tuesday that the unit will be an
important component of training for the school's stu-dents
of occupational, physical and speech therapy, of
which there are now 66.
McCulloch said the primary concern will be evalua-tion
and treatment of patients who are physically or
neurophysiologically impaired. The goal is to restore
them as much as possible to independent functioning.
Previously, only limited physical therapy had been
available at LSUMC, it was reported. Occupational
therapy began on a part-time basis in 1978, speech
therapy was added in 1979.
The new unit will enable the School of Allied Health
Professions to expand its educational program in
physical therapy and initiate an educational program in
occupational therapy. Schuckers said he expects the
school to double its current enrollment within two years.
