$47,600 Is Awarded
Eight Local Probers
For Heart Research
Grants totalling $47,600 have been
awarded to six research in-vestigators
and two medical students
in Shreveport by the American Heart
Association, Louisiana affiliate.
Dr. Alfredo Lopez, president of the
heart association's state chapter, an-nounced
today that more than
$225,000 will be expended for re-search
throughout the state by the
Louisiana affiliate in 1978-1979.
The $47,600 to be used by local
researchers "is being reinvested in
Shreveport to advance scientific re-search
into the causes of
cardiovascular disease, and is in
addition to the monies reinvested in
your area for community service
and educational programs," Lopez
said.
Research grants are reviewed by a
research committee of the affiliate
and are directed toward identifying
potential investigators and providing
cardiovascular researchers their
first independent experience. Grants
are for one year and are open to
qualified young physicians and sci-entists
in Louisiana.
Medical student educational re-search
fellowships are for training in
research laboratories during sum-mer
and are open to medical school
students who must work under close
supervision and guidance of a pro-fessor.
Research investigators at the LSU
School of Medicine in Shreveport
are: Dr. David S. Knight, anatomy;
Dr. Michael S. Rohr, surgery; Dr.
John W. Dailey, pharmacology and
therapeutics; and Dr. Tomas C. Wel-bourne,
physiology and biophysics.
Research investigators at Louisi-ana
State University in Shreveport
are: Dr. Selvestion Jimes, biological
science; and Dr. Ronald A. Martin,
chemistry.
Medical school students who re-ceived
the award are: Ken R. Ellzey,
biochemistry and molecular biology;
and J.M. Wilson, biochemistry and
molecular biology.
