Med Center Will
Do Rape Exams
Faculty members of LSU Medical
Center's obstetrics and gynecology
department will perform examina-tions
of Shreveport rape victims.
Thursday's announcement from
LSU Medical Center came in the
wake of notice by the Caddo Parish
coroner that he will no longer check
the women.
Hospital Administrator Robert
Hall said the arrangement may be
only temporary until a permanent
policy can be established. Dr. Robert
Braswell, coroner, will still perform
post-rape examinations of cases han-dled
by the Caddo sheriff's office, he
noted.
Braswell told Shreveport police
early Wednesday morning when he
was called to perform an examina-tion
that he would no longer do them.
He cited a 1979 statute which he says
the coroner shall not perform rape
examinations.
District Attorney Paul Carmouche
said he has asked for an attorney
general's opinion on the statute.
A local woman had to wait nearly
two hours Wednesday after both the
coroner and LSU Hospital personnel
refused to examine her.
"Hospital staff were unsure of the
. correct procedures to follow as a
result of this change and subsequent-ly,
arrangements were made to have
the city of Shreveport city physician
perform the examination at another
hospital," Hall noted.
"It was determined that the
change from the longstanding prac-tice
involving the coroner's office
examination of rape victims and the
time of morning at which this oc-curred
were the causes of the ex-amination
not being performed at
LSU Hospital in Shreveport," Hall
said.
On Thursday, another local wom-an
faced a long wait after Braswell
refused to make a post-rape ex-amination.
Braswell could not be
reached for comment.
