Ending the waiting
at LSU Hospital
One of the most nagging problems at LSU Hospital in Shreveport
— formerly known as Confederate Memorial Hospital — has been
the inordinate amount of time patients had to spend waiting to be
seen by a doctor. Accounts bordering on horror stories have been
heard time and again through the years, with eight-hour waits not
uncommon, and even longer ones occurring far too often.
While the problem may not be solved completely, and while
efforts to reduce waiting time at the walk-in clinic definitely need to
be continued, there is evidence that at least the time is being reduced
these days. Dr. Ike Muslow, vice chancellor of the hospital, says
changes in house officers and procedures have added more doctors to
duty in the walk-in clinic, with the result that patients since July 1
have been seen more quickly than they would have been in the recent
past. All patients who arrive at the clinic in the morning, for
example, have been seen by 3 p.m., according to Dr. Muslow. That
could still mean a too-long waiting period for some, but at least it's
being reduced by a few hours.
We hope these efforts continue, and that the procedures for
seeing patients are refined still further — perhaps with some kind of
appointment system which would help spread the patient load out
over a confirmed schedule, much the same as the system used by
many private clinics. That, at least, would keep a sick person from
having to spend all morning in the waiting room, if he knew for sure
that he wouldn't get to see a doctor until mid-afternoon. Officials
have also noted that Monday and Tuesday seem to be "heavy" days at
the clinic, while the patient load is lighter on later weekdays. Perhaps
an appointment system would also help distribute the patient load
more evenly through the week, allowing for more regular scheduling
of doctors staffing the clinic.
The addition of more staff and students at the LSU Medical
Center is helping ease some of the crunch, according to Dr. Muslow,
and that in turn means the Med Center is growing toward its full
potential, which is good news for the whole area. As it grows in size
and in the quality of its faculty and student body, though, it must take
care that it also grows in the quality of care it offers its patients.
Reducing waiting time in the clinic may seem a small step, but to the
patients who are waiting, it's a big move toward better care
