LSU medical school
to confer 98 degrees
Louisiana State University Medical Center
School of Medicine in Shreveport will confer 98
doctor of medicine degrees during its 10th com-mencement
exercises at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 29,
in Shreveport's Civic Theater.
The 98 will bring to 598 the total number of
graduates over the 10-year period.
Keynote speaker for the commencement will be
Dr. C. Everett Koop, surgeon general, U.S. Public
Health Service, and deputy assistant secretary for
health in the Department of Health and Human
Services (HHS).
Dr. Martin D. Woodin, president of the LSU
System, will confer the degrees. Dr. Allen A.
Copping, chancellor of the LSU Medical Center,
will present the candidates for degree conferral.
Dr. Perry G. Rigby, dean of the School of Medicine
in Shreveport, will administer the Oath of Hip-pocrates.
Presiding at the ceremonies will be Dr.
William T. McElroy Jr., associate dean for ad-missions.
The guest speaker for commencement, Koop, is a
pediatric surgeon of worldwide experience. He was
appointed to his HHS post in February 1981 and
was sworn in as surgeon general on Jan. 21,1982.
Before joining HHS, Koop was surgeon-in-chief
of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and pro-fessor
of pediatric surgery and pediatrics at the
University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He
had been associated with the University of Penn-sylvania
since 1941.
As the surgeon general, Koop advises the public
on health matters such as smoking and health, diet
and nutrition, environmental health hazards, and
the importance of immunization and disease pre-vention.
The surgeon general oversees the ac-tivities
of the 7,200-member Public Health Service
Commissioned Corps.
Specific responsibilities of the surgeon general
vested by law include serving as ex-officio member
of the Board of Regents of the National Library of
Medicine, member of the Board of Regents of the
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sci-ences,
member of the Board of Directors of the
Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, member of
the Board of Directors of the Gorgas Memorial
Institute, and assuming responsibility for review-ing
the particulars of Department of Defense plans
for transportation, open testing and disposal of
lethal chemicals and biological agents and recom-mending
precautions necessary to protect the pub-lic
health and safety.
From 1960 until his appointment as deputy
assistant secretary for health in 1981, he was a
member of the board of directors of MAP Interna-tional,
a relief agency providing medicines,
materiel and consulation services in the fields of
medicine, sanitation, nutrition, water supply and
hospital construction to undeveloped countries. He
was the board's vice president for eight years.
Koop is a member of the American Surgical
Association, the Society of University Surgeons, the
American Pediatric Surgical Association, and oth-er
professional societies, and is a Fellow of the
American College of Surgeons and the American
Academy of Pediatrics. He also holds memberships
in many international organizations.
His many honors and awards include an hon-orary
degree of doctor of letters from Eastern
College, an honorary degree of doctor of medicine
from the University of Liverpool, the degree of
doctor of humane letters from Wheaton College
and the degree of doctor of science from Gweynedd
Mercy College, and doctorate degrees from the
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and
St. Charles Barromeo Seminary. He was awarded
the Denis Browne Gold Medal, presented by the
British Association of Pediatric Surgeons; the Wil-liam
E. Ladd Gold Medal of the American
Academy of Pediatrics, in recognition of outstand-ing
contributions to the field of pediatric surgery;
the Order of Duarte; Sanchez, and Mella, the
highest award of the Dominican Republic, for his
achievement in separating the conjoined Domini-can
twins; and a number of other awards from
civic, religious, medical and philanthropic or-ganizations.
He was awarded the Medal of the
Legion of Honor by France in 1980.
He is the author of more than 170 articles and
books on the practice of medicine.
Koop was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Oct. 14, 1916.
He was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1937
and received his M.D. degree from Cornell Medical
College in 1941. After serving an internship at the
Pennsylvania Hospital, he pursued postgraduate
training in the University of Pennsylvania School
of Medicine, Boston Children's Hospital and the
Graduate School of Medicine of the University of
Pennsylvania, from which he received the degree
of Doctor of Science (Medicine) in 1947. He was
named assistant professor of surgery in the Univer-sity
of Pennslvania School of Medicine in 1949,
associate professor in 1952 and professor of
pediatric surgery in the school of Medicine in 1959
and the Graduate School of Medicine in 1960 He
was appointed professor of pediatrics in 1971.
He is married to the former Elizabeth Flanagan
and has three living children and five grand-children.
