Two Named
To Posts at
Confederate

Two new chiefs of services at
Confederate Memorial Medical
Center were approved by the
board last night.
Dr. Albert G. Smith, professor
of pathology and head of the
Department of Pathology at
Louisiana State University Med-ical
School at Shreveport, was
named chief of pathology at
Confederate. He replaces Dr,
W. R. Mathews, who resigned
the position earlier this year.
Approved as chief of the
Department of Psychiatry was
Dr. Charles C. Schober, who is
head of the Department of
P s y c h i a t r y aL the medical
school. He replaces Dr. Nathan
Bender.
Both appointments are subject
to approval of the visiting staff.
Both Schober and Smith were
also okayed by the board for
senior privileges on the hospi-tal's
visiting staff. Also ap-proved
for senior privileges on
the staff were Dr. Mary J.
Wood, Department of Radiolo-gy,
and Dr. John W. Eschen-brenner,
D e p a r t m e n t of
Ophthalmology.
Hospital Director Dr. Edgar
Galloway told the board that the
hospital has been fully approved
by the Cpuncil on Medical
E d u c a t i o n of the American
Hospital Association for 36 ro-tating
internships and one ra-doilogy
internship.
In a report on The Pines
Sanatorium, Dr. Charles Black
said the census was 39; 10 were
discharged, five were admitted;
there were 128 outpatients.
Giving a report on the school
of nursing was Tiny Calender,
director of the school, who said
the school has 75 freshmen, 13
juniors and 26 seniors.
She said that plans are being
made to start the associate
degree program in September.
The program is designed to
prepare the student for bedside
nursing care, and will provide
an opportunity for women who
are married and have reared
their families to go back to
school.
