purchasing agent George
Schwab at the Veterans Admin-istration
Hospital, where the
medical school's administrative
offices are located.
The bid came within the
construction budget according
to Associate Dean George Me-neely,
who said the budget is
about $24 million. Total project
cost is $30.5 million, and in-cludes
$20,288,242 in federal
funds, and $10,211,758 in state
bond money.
Dr. Martin Woodin, executive
vice president of LSU who
represented LSU President John
A. Hunter at the bid opening
said that the bids will be taken
under advisement and "will be
studied and analyzed and we
will see how they look."
Before a decision can be
made the bids must be checked
out with "the federal agency
involved in the financing of the
project," he added.
He said announcement of the
bidder should be made by the
end of the week.
Dean Edgar Hull said he is
"quite happy with the situation
and from now on we are in
business."
Some 500 special invitations
will be sent out for the ground-breaking
which is planned for
Sept. 15 at 4 p.m., with Gov.
John J. M c K e i t h e n as the
principal speaker, but the public
is also invited to the ceremo-nies.
Completion date is 1975.
Some 100 suppliers, bonds-men,
contractors, architects and
Shreveport businessmen were
present for the bid opening.
The building will have 550,000
gross square feet and will
include five buildings, with an
11-story facility dominating the
complex. It is the largest
building in North Louisiana and
second only to Charity Hospital
in New Orleans in size within
the state, according to Hull.
Associated Medical School Ar-chitects
is in charge of the
building design and will super-vise
construction. The group is
made up of three architectural
firms, Samuel G. Wiener &
Associates, Wilson & Sandifer,
and William B. Wiener, Morgan
& O'Neal.
