2-Year Accreditation Granted to Confederate
By Margaret Martin
Times Medical Writer
Confederate Memorial Medi-cal
Center has r e c e i v e d a
two-year accreditation from the
Joint Commission on Accredita-tion
of Hospitals, Robert Hall,
. assistant administrator, told di-rectors
last night.
The hospital last year was put
on one-year accreditation sta-tus.
There were 20 deficiencies
listed' at that time, with the
main complaint being lack of
registered nurse coverage at
The Pines Sanatorium in spite
of a specific recommendation in
1969 that this be corrected.
A one-year approval is full
accreditation, but two one-year
accreditations can mean proba-tion.
In the letter to Hospital
Administrator Dr. Edgar Gallo-way
announcing the two-year
status, Dr. John D. Porterfield,
director of the Joint Commis-sion
listed recommendations for
improvement of the quality of
patient care based on findings
of the survey.
The letter warned " t h e s e
w a r r a n t y our attention and
should be put into effect before
the next visit of a representa-tion
of the commission."
The surveyors recommended
that the preanesthesia evalua-tion
should be performed by a
physician.
In the area of environmental
services, the commission sug-gested
that a written preventive
maintenance program be devel-oped
for the entire hospital;
that ranges in the kitchen of
The Pines be provided with an
automatic f i r e extinguishing
system, and that The Pines be
provided with emergency power
source.
The commission suggested
that "as previously recommend-ed,
the pharmacy-therapeutics
committee, in cooperation with
the pharmacist and representa-tives
of other disciplines as
necessary, should develop policy
in regard to drug distribution,
accountability and administra-tion
of drugs throughout the
hospital."
It also recommended that "it
is desirable for the pharmacist
to review the original or a
direct copy of the physician's
order for patient medication
before the initial dose is dis-pensed."
In other action—
The board approved visiting
s t a f f appointments for Drs.
Ronald B. George, Department
of Internal Medicine, and F.
Dean Griffen and R. M. Yeager,
both in the D e p a r t m e n t o f
General Surgery.
Reported that there are a
total of 77 in the Northwestern
State University-CMMC School
of Nursing, including 52 fresh-men
and 15 juniors in the
associate degree program, and
10 in the diploma program.
Reported that there were 90
outpatients at The Pines; an
average of 41 inpatients; nine
patients admitted, seven dis-charged
and one died.
Announced that Arthur
Th o m p s o n has been named
assistant attorney general in
charge of collecting ineligible
patient receipts for the hospital.
Voted to again hire the
necessary residents to cover the
admitting and emergency rooms
in lieu of a lack of rotating
interns. Cost last year was
$180,000.
