              Muslow named LSUMC vice chancellor

BATON ROUGE - Dr. Ike Muslow
was named vice chancellor for
Shreveport affairs for the statewide
Louisiana State University Medical
Center on Friday.
Muslow has been dean of
Shreveport's LSU School of Medicine
for the past six years, and he is moving
into a position that has been vacant for
several years. The appointment
becomes effective July 1.
Dr. Perry G. Rigby, associate dean
for academic affairs at the LSU School
of Medicine in Shreveport, will serve as
acting dean until a new permanent dean
is chosen.
The selections were made by the LSU
Board of Supervisors in Batorf Rouge.
They follow on the heels of Thursday's
scathing criticisms before a Senate
committee by state Sen. Bill Keith, D-Mooringsport,
of operations at the
Shreveport medical school-hospital
complex.
Keith alleged that poor communica-tion
between the Shreveport complex
and Dr. Allen Copping, chancellor of
LSU Medical Center whose office is in
New Orleans, has resulted in inefficient
and ineffective operations at the
Shreveport facility.
The senator further charged faculty
and staff at the Shreveport complex had
been threatened with the loss of their
jobs if they testified before the Senate
panel. Keith later charged Copping with
directing the harassment.
As a result, the committee is subpoe-naing
Copping, other officials and
Shreveport faculty to testify on the
allegations at another meeting
scheduled Thursday.
The Times was unable to contact
Copping concerning Muslow's new as-signment.
Muslow said there is no connection
between Keith's charges and his ap-pointment.
"It really has nothing to do with what
happened yesterday," said Muslow. "I
sort of wish you would not mix them
together. They are totally unrelated."
However, Keith was quick to dis-agree,
contending, "I think it's just a
smoke screen to get that Senate panel
off their back."
Asked whether he thinks the new
assignment for Muslow might address
some of his concerns, Keith said, "I
know enough about Allen Copping to say
he is not going to give any authority to
anybody. I don't think it's going to solve
anything."
While criticizing Copping severely on
Thursday, Keith had praised Muslow
for his work at the center.
Muslow was reluctant to offer a
thorough description of his new job,
deferring to Copping.
In a press release announcing the
move, officials of the LSU Medical
Center's executive office in New Or-leans
said, "As vice-chancellor, Dr.
Muslow will be responsible for liaison
activities between the North Louisiana
community and the Medical Center,
coordinator of medical services for the
LSU Hospital and E.A. Conway
Memorial Hospital in Monroe and other
clinical affiliations, and additional ad-ministrative
duties as a staff member
to Chancellor Copping."
Copping was quoted as saying, "To-day's
action by the Board represents
another step necessary for the develop-ment
of the regional medical center
that we envision for the LSU Medical
Center in Shreveport. We, of course, are
pleased that the board chose to appoint
Dr. Muslow to this important position,
and feel that his experience and back-ground
particularly qualify him for this
vice-chancellorship."
