Interview -April 2, 1971
One very interesting aspect in my work in the cardiovascular section
was seeing the number of electrocardiograms among young healthy soldiers
who had T-wave abnormalties which ordinarily would have been a means
of discharging them. In fact, in the early phases of our work in the hospital,
many of these men were sent home because of abnormal T-wave changes
and as we investigated these and studied them we found that many of these
T-wave changes were the results of rapid rate changes rather than due to
organic disease. Some of them we would have rest, get the rate down and
get a normal electrocardiogram. Some of them we had to give sodium
pentothal to intravenicusly and bring their rate down from 110 or so to 80
and then get a perfectly normal electrocardiogram thus showing that rate
affects repolarization which causes the change in the T-wave. I collected
several of these cases and wrote them up into a paper entitled "Normal
Variations of the T-wave 11 which proved to be a very interesting experience
for me and served as a guideline for observing electrocardiograms in the
future; I think that often we read more into cardiograms than should be
read.
We also had an opportunity to observe with other hospitals in the
Mediterranean Theater gunshot wounds of the heart and how well the heart
did with many gunshot wounds. I think it was the concensus of many of the
cardiac surgeons to leave these wounds alone and not to go in and take them
out. I think many of these did very well. I never had a follow-up on this
