| Title | The transformation of Athens as a result of the Athens 2004 Olympics |
| Author | Mazarakis, Georgios E. |
| Abstract/Introduction | For the purposes of this paper I will not focus on every stadium construction and renovation project since they are simply too many to list. Briefly, the projects directly related to hosting the Olympics were the construction of eleven sports facilities, the renovation and construction of the OAKA Olympic Sports Complex, and the construction of the Olympic Village. Other improvements not directly related to the Olympics, but ones that were sped up as a result, were the renovation of tourism infrastructure, such as roads, ports, bridges, public transportation, and the construction of a new airport. My focus will be on a few major areas: the costs of the Olympics, the Olympic Village, the OAKA Olympic Sports complex, the Hellenikon Airport, the transportation network renovation, the Rio-Antirio bridge, and the after the Olympics uses of some of the facilities constructed for the Games. This is so because the major purpose of this paper is to examine the overall impact of these key projects on the lifestyle of Athenians and the stature and competitiveness of Athens as a world-class city. |
