Abstract/Introduction	The Renaissance assertion that mankind was worthy and dignified was born in fifteenth century Italy. Giannozzo Manetti, a Florentine humanist, captured this idea in his work, On the Dignity and Excellence of Man (1451-1452).1 Manetti finds beauty in the corporeal as well as spiritual nature of man; furthermore, he elevates man from a medieval conviction of worthless in the eyes of God to the humanist belief that man is God's finest creation. 2 Renaissance artist Leon Battista Alberti echoed this conviction in his treatise, On Painting (1435-1436). In his writings, he equates the artist with God. Alberti stated, "Therefore, painting contains within itself this virtue that any master painter who sees his works adored will feel himself considered another god."3
