| Abstract/Introduction | Most people don't look at the South as a mecca for literary activity. Any writing that has escaped the area is viewed more as an anomaly than a testament to the education or creativity of the southern region of the United States. Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama consistently battle for last place in national rankings of literacy, education, and income. This is the story of me growing up in a literate South, despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. |
