| Facilitator Log | 02:00 Winston had just graduated from high school when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He quickly enlisted. 03:14 Winston talks about his membership in the Ancient Order of the Deep, a membership gained by enduring intense hazing when he first crossed the equator. 06:13 Winston was assigned to the USS Counsel. The ship was a mine sweeper but was also equipped with SONAR so that it could accompany other ships through waters that hid enemy submarines. 09:46 Winston has been through three typhoons. 10:59 Winston was the Quartermaster in charge of steering the ship through the typhoon and he describes the experience of going through to the eye of the storm. 20:29 Winston was with the rest of his crew near Okinawa preparing for another battle when the war ended after the surrender of the Japanese. |
