The new Parish Prison official physician — appointed Aug. 1 by criminal sheriff John J. Grosch Sr. — plans to turn a section of the institution into a full-time hospital for inmates.
The physician, Dr. Frederick A, Eigenbrod, an internal medicine specialist, said Thursday it is his -goal to make the prison into one of the most sanitary and healthful penal institutions in the country.
Dr. Eigenbrod, 35, has been spending a part of each day for the past month'at the prison out-lining his preliminary steps for a health program, which includes the establishment of a 12-bed hospital.
The program includes a complete physical examination of each new prisoner. He plans to keep a complete medical history on each inmate, and in time, established periodic blood tests and chest X-rays. He will also supervise the preparation of food.
Dr. Eigenbrod said his daily program will be thorough inspections of the building, facilities and kitchen personnel, and a 'daily "sick call" for those who complain of illness.. He said: he. hopes to have internes from Charity hospital assist him in his work.
Dr. Eigenbrod resides with his family at No. 7 Althea, Metairie. A graduate of the Louisiana State university medical school in 1938, he served as a major in the medical corps during World- War II. There Will Be 'Sick Call' Every Day at Prison
