Four young New Orleans physicians are the first recipients of the Farnsworth fellowship in psychiatry, established last year to bolster the staffs of Louisiana mental hospitals.
The fellowship, established by R. P. Farnsworth and Company, Inc., is sponsored by the Louisi-ana Society for Mental Health. The first awards were announced Saturday by Roy M. Schwarz, president of the society.
The recipients are Dr. Wil liam R. Sorum, Dr. Andre Charles L. Touzet, Dr. Fred R. Hine and Dr. George W. Burke.
Each will receive a grant of $3000, to be paid during a three, year hospital residency with the understanding that at "the end of the residency he will spend at least one year on the staff of a Louisiana mental hospital.
Selections were made by a special committee of the society, which includes Dr. Henry O. Colomb, a society board member; Dr. Robert B. Heath, head of Tu-lane university's department of psychiatry; Dr. Robert A. Matthews, chairman of the psychiatry department at Louisiana State university; Jesse H. Banks-ton, director of the state hospital board, and Dr. Lloyd W. Rowland, director of the mental health society.
Schwarz said the fellowship is given to young physicians who are taking graduate work in psychiatry, with special pref-erence given those who have an interest in institutional work.
