Special awards were presented to Louisiana State University School of Medicine seniors here Saturday. The class of 97 will receive their degrees in Baton Rouge next Saturday.
The $100 Dr. George S. Bel award, presented by Mrs. Bel to the senior whose scholastic record meets requirements and who "symbolizes the highest ideals of medicine," went to Jackson L. Thatcher of Baton Rouge. The senior class presented to the school a portrait of Dr. James B. Rives, a faculty member. Dr. Rives, on behalf of the faculty, gave the school a portrait of W. Branks
Stewart, the late head of the LSU department of medical illustration, painted by a friend, Charles Richards.
Other award winners were Floris Hebert, New Orleans, the Psi Chapter, Alpha Epsilon Iota medical sorority award to the outstanding woman senior student.
Warren Boyer, New Orleans, neuropsychiatry award; honorable mention, Seymour Polk, Brooklyn, N.; Y.
William Stephens, New Orleans, the American Academy of Dental Medicine award.
Jack Strong, Birmingham, Ala., the J. A. Majors Medical Book Co. award to the senior with the high-est average in pathology.
Francis Rodwig, Monroe, the Beta PI Chapter, Alpha Kappa Kappa fraternity award for the senior "who has done the most to elevate the professional standards of his class."
Warren Boyer, Carlton Var Natta, Joseph Perloff, Horace Chalstrom and Adrien Bodet, all of New .Orleans; James Young, Ruston; Millard Byrd, Baton Rouge, and Rodney Landreneau, Eunice, the C. V. Mosby Publishing Co. awards. ;'
