They are studying medical technology. They are working in chemistry, bacteriology, hematology and tissue.
Dr. John G. Arnold, chairman of the medical technology and ology departments, says: "The med tech is the doctor's right arm. "The med tech is not to be confused with a nurse. She performs the tests which aid the doctor to make a speedy and accurate diagnosis.
"Under the direction of a pathologist or other qualified physician, the med tech is capable of performing the various chemical, mi scopic, bacteriologic and other laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis, study and treatment of diseases."
Dr. Catherine Goetz, one of the few women pathologists in the city, is an associate professor of technology at Loyola.
She believes the profession is a noble as well as a lucrative one. A med tech can get a job anytime, she points out—revery hospital in New Orleans welcomes trained personnel in this field. » ! During the past few years the profession has been a woman's field but men are now invading the field. Two of the Loyola med tech students are men.
Loyola's department is associated with internship to Hotel Dieu, Touro, U. S. Public Health hospital, Sara Mayo clinic and Mercy hospital.
In the senior year, the med tech spends internship in a hospital laboratory. During internship the student "has an opportunity to perform or, help perform all clinical laboratory procedures.
