The Louisiana State university medical school reported Thursday that almost 600 human eyes have been mailed to its ophthalmic laboratory here in the last six years for free examination and diagnosis.
The laboratory makes use of the eyes in teaching as well as reporting diagnostic results to doctors.
The laboratory is under the- direction of Dr. Aeleta Barber, who often reports on an eye before the patient leaves the hospital, This enables the doctors to provide emergency treatment if necessary in event of a malignancy.
Part of Collection
Eyes have been sent the laboratory by* Charity hospital and private physicians in the state and at least five other states which are curious about the cause of an eye disturbance.
The eyes are mailed the laboratory in bottles of formalin, a solution of formaldehyde and as many as eight have been received in one day. Many of these become a part of a valuable teaching collection, slides which Dr Barber considers the most important part of her work. One of the great values of the laboratory is the help it provides in training specialists in eye diseases.
