A new application of antibiotics which may reduce the dangers of colon resection and which is expected to change ideas on how and why some complications occur in large bowel surgery is reported in the "Annals of Surgery" this month as the discovery of researchers at the Louisiana State university school of medicine.
This technique, which may have application in all types of large bowel surgery, is one of the means to prevent postsurgical leaks from the colon.
4'It is one additional safety factor to those undergoing surgery of the large bowel and will have, great benefit in battle-field surgery and in the surgery of those who have received an injury to the bowel as the result of an accident," said Dr. Isidore Cohn Jr., who conducted the research with Dr. James D, Rives, head of the department of surgery, and medica1 student Charles D. Langford, of Gibsland. Credited with Saving Life
The new practice has already been used at Charity hospital, and in one case, has been definitely credited with* the saving of a life, he said.
