Quiet, private funeral services for a murdered Gentilly couple were held in a rain-spattered cemetery Sunday afternoon.
Even as the funeral took place detectives pressed their round-the - clock hunt for the killer or killers of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph B. de Villentroy Jr.
But mystery continued to shroud the double killing.
The Orleans parish coroner's office turned the bodies over to the family about 9 a. m. Sunday. The funeral was conducted by the F. Laudumiey and Co., Ltd., 625 N. Rampart.
BEATEN BEFORE SLAIN Dr. Nicholas Chetta, parish coroner, said both of the de Villentroy s" had been beaten about the head before they were murdered.
Dr. Chetta said Mr. de Villentroy was shot once in the back of the head with a .22 caliber pistol. Mrs. de Villentroy's throat had been cut,.
Police are baffled as to the motive for the slaying.
Officers are fairly certain that the dead couple knew their killer or killers, and possibly even admitted the siayer to their apartment. The absence of any sort of struggle, or robbery, precipitated this theory.
