A total of $148,208 for research and research training in heart and blood vesse; diseases has been appropriated for the next 12 months by the Louisiana Heart Association.
The grants, made for the 1959-60 fiscal year beginning July 1, are twice the association's appropriations for the 1958-59 year.
Dr. Homer J. Dupuy, association president, said the record increase is due to greater public support for the state heart fund and the use of the first installment of a bequest to the association by the late-J. Walter Libby of New Orleans. Aid Grants Largest
A major portion of the funds, $66,323, will be used to support 17 major grants-in-aid to Louisiana scientists*
The appropriation also includes $4*v92.1; to finance research grafts of the American Heart Association; $15,675 to be awarded to four "Libby Research Fellows"; $17,700 for summer fellowships to 27 medical students, and $2588 for col-
lege student grants.
The association's major grant-in-aid award will be $14,500 to Dr. Gerald S. Berenson, and Dr. Arthur F. Fishkin, both of the Louisiana State university school of medicine. The grant is the largest single award ever made by the state association. Dr. Berenson, an associate professor of medicine, and Dr. Fishkin, instructor in biochemistry, will study heart diseases associated with disturbance of connective tissue. .
