When Plaquemines parish opens its health service unit May 1, all 64 parishes in Louisiana will have full time local health units, Dr. W. J. Rein, state health officer, announced Friday.
The newly appointed parish board of health met recently to draw up a formal contract, setting May 1 as a tentative date for opening the new unit.
Members of the board appointed by the parish police jury are Dr. J. T. Reeves, chairman; Dr. John Lindner, S. A. Moncla and A. E. Zevely.
Earlier this month, the police jury met with District Attorney Leander H. Perez; Dr. Andrew Hedmeg, director of tlie division of local health services, and Stephen C. Newitt, director of administrative services for the state board of health. This group set up the unit with an annual budget of approximately $30,000 of parish, state and federal funds.
Location of the health unit and ! clinics will be announced shortly.
Dr. Hedmeg credited local civic groups and parish officials for the work.
