hn Carter, former Louisiana State university medical school professor, will be conducted at 1 p. m. Saturday from Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp, Inc., 4127 S. Claiborne.
Interment will be in Lakelawn Mausoleum.
Dr. Carter died Friday morning at his residence, 3133 Napoleon, following a brief illness. He was 72.
A native 6f Marianna, Fla., Dr. Carter retired.last March. He graduated from Tulane university in 1912, and was a resident of New Orleans ever since that time.
He was house surgeon at the New York Lying-in hospital from 1913-14. In 1914 he became assistant professor of obstetrics and assistant professor of operative gynecology at Tulane, positions he held until 1931.
He was professor of obstetrics and director of that department at the LSU medical school from 1932 to 1942.
He was also senior visiting 'surgeon in the obstetrics department at Baptist hospital and independent director of obstetrics and gynecology at Charity hospital.
He was a lieutenant in a base hospital in France during World War I.
He was a diplomate of the; American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a charter member of the Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
He also was a member of Rayne Memorial church, the Pan-American Medical Association, the Southern Medical As-! sociation, the Southeast Surgical Congress, Central Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Alpha Tau Omega, and Phi Chi medical. fraternity.
Survivors include his widow, the former Miss Mildred Guit-reau; a son, Philips John Carter Jr.; three sisters, Miss Eugenia Carter and Miss Margaret Carter of Baton Rouge, and Mrs. William Gatzke, Wyandotte, Mich., and three brothers, Dr. John Carter Jr., Beaumont, Tex., and Frank and Dickson Carter of Pensacola, Fla.
