DR. ABE Mickal, former football star at Louisiana State
university, is among the 25 final winners of Sports Illustrated's Silver Anniversary All-America awards. The award goes to former football stars who, during the past 25 years, have been successful in their chosen profession.
This unique award reflects the glory of exceptional achievement in many fields. In addition to successful professional men like Dr. Mickal, there are noteworthy names such as Pulitzer Prize author John Hersey, Yale; Jim Lee Howell, head coach of the New York Giants,pro football team who formerly played for Arkansas; Dr. Cecil Humphreys, president of Memphis State university, a former Tennessee player, and Frederick B. Mosely Jr., vice president of Morgan Guaranty Trust Company, who played for Harvard.
Although it is the man's record in the intervening 25 years since he played college football in 1935 which is .judged for this award, sports fans will be doubly moved to contemplate on this year's roster such gridiron stars as Jay Berwanger of Chicago, first winner of the Heisman Trophy; Dan Fortmann of Colgate, at 16 an All-America choice; William Shakespeare of Notre Dame, whose last-second touchdown pass robbed Ohio State of a national championship, and Joe Stydahar of West Virginia, whose career with the Chicago Bears and the Los Angeles Rams terminated only a few years ago.
Dr. Mickal was born in Talia, Syria, in 1913. He came to this country with his mother and two other children shortly after World War I to join his father, who had emigrated earlier and settled in McComb, Miss.
He played football at LSU under "Biff" Jones in 1933 and '34 and was a member of Bernie Moore's first team at LSU in 1935 that lost its first game to Rice 7-10, then won nine straight to capture th© conference championhip. He won All-America and All-Southeastern distinction in his senior year. He participated in the second Sugar Bowl game ?Jan. 1, 1936, engaging in a duel with Sammy Baugh of TCU. The Horned Frogs won, 3 to 2.
Dr. Mickal, in 195* was appointed professor and head M the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Louisiana State university. He has always maintained a keen interest in the affairs of the LSU alumni, having served as Alumni Federation president, as alumni representative on ; the University Athletic Council, and as a member of the executive committee of the LSU Alumni Fund.
Glenn E. Seidel, a former assistant coach at Tulane under Lowell "Red^ Dawson and Paul "Bear" Bryant, head football coach at Alabama, are among others selected for the awards. Seidel is corporate vice president in charge of engineering at Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Co
