Institutional cancer research grants totaling $120,000 have been awarded to four universities in the area, it was announced today by the Greater New Orleans Cancer Association.
The institutions and the grants they received are Louisiana State university, $40,000; Tulane university, $40,000; Loyola university, $20,000; Dillard uni-( versity, $10,000, and Xavier university, $10,000.
The grants, which cover a two-year period, took effect July 1.
The awards were made to LSU and Tulane through their medical schools, but scientists from other colleges of each university will also receive some of the funds.
William J. Guste Jr., president of the association, said: ''These grants are for the purpose of supporting venturesome ideas in can-

cer research. It is anticipated they will in no way take the place of research support already available through the cancer association or other agencies.
"Rather, it is intended that the institutional grant will make available to the investigator sums for preliminary or pilot studies and that these funds will be awarded at any time, upon request, if the institutional research committee considers an application meritorious."
Each university has set up a cancer research committee to distribute portions of its grant to its scientists and doctors. Chairmen of the committees are Dr. A, SidnexJiarj:is, LSU; Dr. Edward f. Krementz, Tulane; the Rev. F. A. Benedetto, S, J., Loy-j ola; Dr. Philip J. Hornung, Xav-j ier, and Clifford R. Bryan, Dillard.
