The general duty section of Nurses Association will sponsor a "General Duty Nurse of the Year" competition among hospital staff nurses next month, Miss Sue Arnoult, district president, announced Sunday.
Miss Arnoult said purposes of the competition are to encourage professional growth and development, to create interest in quality and quantity of general duty nursing, and to stimulate interest of general duty nurses in activities of the association's general duty section.
Committees in 11 New Orleans hospitals will nominate candidates for the award. Nominees will be judged by a group of nursing leaders. The winner will be honored as the "1962 General Duty Nurse" at an awards banquet March 19.
Miss Ruth Galloway, chairman of the district's general duty section, said nominees will be judged on the basis of functions, standards and qualifications of the general duty nurse, as outlined by the American Nurses Association and the Louisiana State Nurses Association.
She said general duty nurses are the largest group of professional nursing practitioners and are responsible for the most patient care in hospitals.
"The challenge of every nurse in the New Orleans district is to provide a closer balance between what nurses are doing and what they believe they should be doing to provide better nursing service," she continued.
Miss Antoinette Thompson, staff nurse at Veterans Administration hospital, is chairman of the competition.
