A new drug called bacitracin, which in many instances is more effective than penicillin,,has joined the ranks of disease killers.
A large percentage of the research and testing both on animals and humans "Which made the drug available for medical use was done it the LSU school of medicine and Charity Hospital.
Dr. Alfred Longacre, .assistant professor of surgery at LSU and director of its anti-biotic research laboratory, said today that in a recent series of cases, many of them Charity Hospital patients the drug was found to be effective in 54 per cent of those infection Cases which-failed to respond to penicillin or other anti-bioties.
"The drug as it is now available can only be administered locally that on the skin, or by mouth," Dr Longacre pointed out adding that injections of the drug are still in the experimental stage.
